Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel announced his Summer Learning initiative, the first coordinated and dedicated approach of its kind to provide youth in every Chicago neighborhood access to high-quality programs that will help them continue to learn throughout the summer months. One hundred and forty three area organizations, including GreenApple Campus, have answered Mayor Emanuel’s call to provide learning  this summer, so that children will not lose ground in the summer slide. 3.12.13SummerLearningInitiative

One component of the Summer Learning initiative is digital badging, which represents a student’s skill acquisition in multiple learning spaces, including afterschool programs, summer programming, workshops and school. The goal is to make these badges, which in the case of GreenApple Campus represent  skills acquisition in STEAM programming and leadership, follow students throughout the course of their studies, similar to health records.  What is a Badge and Why Does it Matter?

In GAC StartUp to Achieve+ learning about business is a verb as participants engage in stock market games, financial literacy, entrepreneurial activities and competitions on their way to becoming the next generation of innovators.

CEOs will set goals, develop their StartUp business plan, hire staff, acquire inventory, advertise to increase brand awareness, and sell, sell, sell to maximize profits. We will challenge participants to develop their best elevator pitch and survive the Apprentice. CEOs will develop a Digital Media Mobile App to represent their StartUp venture. You’re the boss!

NASA launched the Summer of Innovation initiative to use its out-of-this-world missions and technology programs to boost summer learning across the nation. NASA’s Summer of Innovation supports the Educate to Innovate campaign for excellence in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, or STEM, education.

GreenApple Campus NASA Summer of Innovation 2013 programs will be held at Benedictine University Lisle/Naperville, Gordon Tech College Prep Chicago and Olin College Needham MA locations for kids grades 4 to grade 9. GreenApple Campus NASA Summer of Innovation programs include Robotics & Invention and Digital Media & Technology.

Kids Count at GreenApple Campus!

Do you want to be a GreenApple Campus KidCaster? That’s right Kids Count at GreenApple and we want to hear from you. How do you enter? Send a short video telling us why you want to be a KidCaster at GreenApple. Kids ages 7 to 14 can enter. Multiple winners will be selected.

Videos should be approximately 3 minutes in length. Click to see Tips to Shooting and Submitting your Video. Videos must be received by Friday, June 22. KidCaster winners will report from GreenApple programs and events. GreenApple Campus will provide production assistance to KidCaster contest winners video segments. KidCaster summer 2012 videos will be posted on the GreenApple Campus YouTube Channel.
